My First Try At Using A Photoshop Like Program

Okay, so I downloaded Gimp and it is supposably like Photoshop, but anyways I thought I would try my hand at making something. So I decided to try a simple desk wallpaper or background. What I'm wondering is what do you guys think of my first try and do you have suggestions? I'm prepared for the worst. ;)

Looks alright, bit basic. Perhaps change to a table texture (looks like a floor) add some colour hue, press contro (windows) l or command (mac) + U, and play with the hue or in each layer right click and play with the blending options

The drop shadows are fairly random, the lined pad is lit from the north, the pen is lit from the south, all the other elements are lit from directly above.

@Socks - Pretty sure he pulled those images in from other places. So I'd say just flip the pen, and it should be better.
    A good start! :)
