Good info. I'm surprised to find that only one in three developers live below the app poverty line. I figured it would be more.

I predict that in 5 years the top smartphone platforms will be iOS and WinPhone (or whatever they wind up calling it) Android will be a distant 3rd.

    Why this prediction?

Because at their core both Apple and Microsoft are OS companies. They focus on making operating systems. They build amazing APIs for developers to work with. They have a lot of experience and really great talent in this arena.

Android is fragmented, developing for it natively is a pain in the butt. There are a billion different iterations and carriers make adjustments and modifications to the core android distribution constantly breaking stuff.

Developers don't want headaches. They go where the toolset is sweetest. That will be Visual Studio + .NET for MS devs and Xcode for iOS/Mac. Microsoft will use it's clout to leverage select hardware manufacturers to use its OS. Apple will continue to build a niche product and set trends.

Android will continue to exist, but it will not have any killer apps that don't also exist on WinPhone and iOS. The reverse of course will not be true. There will be killer apps on WinPhone and iOS that do not exist on Android. Example: GarageBand for iOS. I don't have a WinPhone, but I predict Microsoft will build a killer app for it.
