CaptFinnCaptFinn Member Posts: 1,828
I downloaded the nexest Android SDK
I opened the terminal and updated all the packages.
I went to GS preferences and aimed it to myhomefolder/SDKFolder.

When I open a project. This is what I get as a error when the project opens.

Did you up change the folder name to sdk? Also did you do an update on the android sdk? I'm gonna do a new video on this.

When I downloaded the sdk the folder had 2 folders in it. SDK and Eclipse. I click and dragged both folders into my home directory folder. and renamed the sdk to SDK. I then opened up the SDK folder and clicked on the "android" terminal icon and it opened a terminal window and then the android updats packages window. I then updated and installed every freaking package down the list. I then went to GS preferences and told it to go to home directory/SDK.

I have always been a " Learn by watching" kind of guy. And I will start this by saying that IM very glad to have access to all the current videos out there that are in regard to GS and the many subjects that branch from it. I salute everyone who has taken the time to make a video for free. Just to help their fellow users. And I am a hard believer in "Beggars cant be choosers"

FBS a video would be great. Coming from someone who learns best from watching videos. If you are planning on making another video. Can I please make a suggestion.

Videos are best when the producer takes all assumption out of the picture. Pretend your viewer is "COMPLETELY" out of their element. To the experienced user, they would see 10 steps and make a quick 10 step video. But to the viewer who is out of their element. That 10 step process is actually a 30 step process. I would love for GS to create or sponsor someone to create a true Step by step comprehensive set of videos for the user who just heard of the site and its awesome possibilities.

    Videos a newcomer would need.

    Installing GS

Installing GS Viewer ( also what files are needed from apple and what to do in Xcode. doing a test run with a GS template to make sure the viewer is working)

    Installing Xcode

Installing Android SDK (file placement, path creation for GS to SDK, setting up other aspects, )

Installing Android Viewer ( Installing and Set up. Doing a test run with a GS template to make sure its working. )

Creating a iOS Developer account with Apple. ( What files need to be created and downloaded. Where there these files need to be placed. What are the purposes of these files and why they are needed.

each video doing a step by step from start to finish.

I know there are hundreds of videos out there that cover almost if not every aspect of this list. But I have noticed that a lot of videos out there has a lot of assumption being made when these videos are being made. That a lot of steps are being missed because the video maker assumes non of the future viewers will be that far out of their element when viewing.

If I had all the combined knowledge that a lot of you guys have. I would take the time myself and help out with videos like this.

Again I and many other appreciate the time that has been taken from the fellow users who make the videos we have today. I only brought this up because FBS mentioned he might make a new video on this subject. So I wanted to make a suggestion.

See BBenk. The video I watched did not express how deep down the path to point it. Prime example of what I was saying in my last post here. Step by Step. Pretend your viewer had NO clue but desperately wants to learn. If your taking the free time to make a video for 100s of users to watch. Assume your viewers have no clue what to do.

K im not longer getting the error. But when I test a gs template. I see no android preview button. Nothing pointing toward testing on a android device.

Did you install the android viewer on your device? As someone with a communications degree in radio and television let me just respond. Remember I have to make videos that are useful to the entire community. Although I agree with what you yourself need remember you're just one type of person out of many. My main feedback from video viewers is to always keep the videos as short as possible and straight and to the point. Usually how most of us do it is we segment our videos. So there might be one on how to use the apple developer area, one on how to install the viewer which incorporates what you learned in the previous described video et... I think you get the point. I know on the surface GS seems easy to use but to really use the power of it takes time. Even with me bringing all my years of collective experience to GS it took me a good year to really become a power user in GS. There is no quick way to learn to use GS. There are so many elements to learn. Most people just don't invest the time it takes to learn all the things needed to learn this software. You will learn but just accept it will take time months even before it all starts to come together for you. Keep at it, it will come.

Yep installed. I understand where you are coming from. But some videos should be step by step. Because some things wont work unless you follow step by step. In this case. GS cookbook section of android publishing vs the videos Ive found so far. contradict each other, or 1 talks about steps the other does not. When in reality there is only 1 right way to set up the sdk. Installing to testing to publishing. Each section has steps and if 1 step is missed then the sdk is not set up properly for testing and publishing. There are subjects that if a video is made. The video cant be fast and loose. Has to be precise and to the point. Which in this case. Im forced to "POKE and HOPE" were as if there was a Step by step video. then no one now or in the future would have to poke and hope. If there was a step by step video. Then 95% of it I could do in my own. And if by some chance the forums could tweak that last 5%. Again I am not really criticizing the work you and the others have done on your free time to help. I just wanted to say that in most cases. If a video is not step by step. It almost defeats the purpose of its creation. Im only refering to things that need to be done in set up. Not actually app making. there are going to be 1000s of way to make a actor do this and that. Im not refering to those videos. Im refering to video like installation of a android SDK from start to finish. Instead of posting the problem and 15 people asking me if i did this step and that step. If there was a video covering each step. 95% of the time the video would be all thats needed and no one would be bothering people as much as they do on the forums. Im not asking someone to do my work for me. Im willing to do the research and trial and error. But when someone works at it for days on end. To finally find out that if that 1 lil box down in the corner was checked instead of unchecked. I would be half way through app development instead of stuck wondering why my android sdk isnt working.

Oh what wasn't checked? Curious yeah some of those early videos without the pre titles were from long ago and we're more quick and lose than my later videos as tshirt booth used to do the heavy lifting on videos when he left I filled the gap with my newer videos. Much of that portal related stuff need s to be updated as much has changed since then. Plus with the pace codewizard is going at it's going to be tough to keep up with videos. I can tell you I used to do longer step by step videos even tshirt did one for a boggle game and nobody watched them. Just saying.

I was using it as a example.. it would suck to find out that I have not started working on my apps because Ive spent a week working on the sdk setup to find out a week later that all I had not done was check a check box or something as simple as that. If there was a video then I could check each step off. Check..... Check..... yep Check..... Check. DONE YAYYYY!!!!!

Instead of " Yes Sir .. why are you canceling your pro account with us today?" well Ive tried and tried and tried but I cant seem to get your sdk requirments to work. I dont know where to start. You wouldnt be getting my call today if I just had a step by step to help me make sure i dont click this or dont forget to click that. etc etc etc.

I would have a step by step video expressing "EVERYTHING" that needs to be done from beginning to end. Starting with First go to this site and download this SDK. Next do this... Next do this. Next do this. Next do this. next go here and click this and do this. Next.... Next.... Next.... now open up one of our GS template and lets test and see if everything is as the way it should be. If you see this and the test works then you are good to go.

And yes today this thread is in regards to the non simplistic way to set up the sdk properly. But if there was such a video made. the next customer wouldnt come up asking for the same thing. All that would have to be done is a link added and reply saying... " Please watch this video link carefully and follow it to a T.

I just want this freaking SDK to work. And right now there is NO video out there that has helped me with this. most videos are assuming that you have already done this and that. And do not point me toward the outdated CookBook.

So what was unchecked so I can make sure I point that out in the new video?
  • CaptFinnCaptFinn Member Posts: 1,828
I was using it as a example. that is not the reason I cant get sdk to work. Im still stick in limbo with the sdk crap. Im just saying it would suck to find out that the reason im still stuck without sdk for an entire week is because of a simple step as checking a check box. There needs to be some step by step instructions.

I created a new user on my Mac for a different set of provisioning I have so maybe today I'll do a video on install it from scratch on there.
  • CaptFinnCaptFinn Member Posts: 1,828
Thanks FBS I truly appreciate the help your providing. Alot of your videos have helped me out in the past. Ive made some apps and published them via iOS and they are doing good. I just bought a Galaxy S4 and am now wanting to do some testing for android. And this damn sdk setup is one big hic up.
  • The_Gamesalad_GuruThe_Gamesalad_Guru Member Posts: 9,922
Yes it been over a year since I installed it as I just have to update it periodically and even the apple developer site has changed since I did the videos on that and Xcode interface has changed as well. I was planning on updating all those videos as I have a much more polished system now from when I did those videos as I invested in some pro screen recording software that makes it easier for me to edit and annotate my videos without it taking hours to do.
  • CaptFinnCaptFinn Member Posts: 1,828
Dont know what screen recorder editor your using. But Im finding Camtasia Products to be the best.

Hey Finnbogg, did you manage to get Android SDK set up? I ask because you mentioned you bought a Galaxy S4 to test on. I bought one a week ago (running Android 4.2.2), and found a huge problem - it won't load games with PNG files in them (made using GS Windows Creator). I tested on 2 different S4's and had the same result. Have you found the same or similar issues? The games start to load, but they freeze with a blank screen, then quit.

I have sent a bug report.
