Can somebody explain user account points vs cookbook points (and that star beside my name)?

It's in the title really, if I click my user name on one of my forum comments it takes me to this page:
http://forums.gamesalad.com/profile/91996/BoomshackBarry
Which says I have 43 points.
If I view the cookbook it says I have 0 points. I just did the first cookbook tutorial so my cookbook points are at 10 now, but it hasn't bumped my 43 user profile points up at all.
So a couple of questions:
1. Where did I get my 43 user profile points from and how do I earn more?
2. The star next to my user name that says 'new user' - is this increased by completing cookbook tutorials or by gaining the other points (however it is I go about that)!
Sorry if the answer is obvious but I started using GS back in the old forum days and I can't see much of an explanation of this stuff anywhere!
Thanks in advance

1/5 = 0-99 points
2/5 = 100-249 points
3/5 = 250-499 points
4/5 = 500-1000 points
5/5 = 1000+ points

And @tenrdrmer I knew it was a conspiracy all along, that's why I never log in without putting on my tin-foil hat first!
It seems like some of these are still misfiring though, there's a few mentioned there that I should have by now, lucky I don't take these things too seriously
