Next-generation iPhone revealed! 960x640 resolution?

Unless you're living under a rock, you may have missed the big news that's hitting Gizmodo, Engadget, every Mac site out there, and even FOX News: someone has allegedly lost a prototype or field test unit of the next generation iPhone and it's looking mighty different.

Since Apple is the king of controlled leaks, this may actually be their boldest attempt yet.

Apple has bumped the specs across the board with a front-facing camera, larger rear-facing camera with flash, and supposedly a higher-resolution display.

This just reiterates the idea I posted a while back that we all need to start building or graphic assets for iPad and Mac desktops, then downsample the graphics to properly support the iPhone. Even if your target platform is only the iPhone, 320x480 may not be the final resolution of the latest iPhone. Make it sharp from the getgo!

The tech sites are slammed, so be patient, but since it's mirrored everywhere, I'm sure you'll see what all the deserved fuss is about.

;)

Yep, I hear ya on the graphics front!

It's looking mighty swish, if it turns the leaks are accurate...

Just sold my 3GS yesterday and awaiting the iPad+3G (and of course, now the new iPhone). I'm in such withdrawals now, it's not even funny.

That one guy in China committed suicide because of the way Apple was drilling him, but this seems too... idiotic to be an accident.

Well, it's all but confirmed by Apple that the next iPhone will sport a 960x640 screen.

Question for the ages is, will GameSalad be supporting it soon? ;)

I warned users back when the iPad was coming out that they should really be designing their graphics for HD, then downscaling it as needed. A lot - and I mean "a lot" - of users are having issues and second thoughts on buying iPhone games for their iPad. They really want to see the HD in action and are willing to pay for it (not EXTRA, mind you, but just paying for it).

It'll be interesting how it all pans out, considering there's a lot of "HD" and 'XL" titles on the App Store that are meant for the iPad. How are users going to distinguish this if the next iPhone is called "iPhone HD?"

I don't think an app designed specifically for the iPad will be useable on an HD iPhone as the screen will still be small, just higher resolution. I think current apps will still look good on an HD iPhone.

my guess is that the HD iPhone will pixel double the older apps, but the new pixels it is doubling are smaller so it should look the same as it looks on the current iphone.

Beyond has a good point though, our apps might look "fine" but our competitors who are designing for the new resolution will have apps that look much better than ours (assuming we don't prepare our graphics for it). So as the standard changes the definition of "fine" will change and an app that looked fine on the current iPhone will look outdated in comparison to new games.

This will make it tough to release a "universial" iPhone/iPod Touch app as the graphics will need to be large just in case the app is loaded on the HD phone.

Hopefully Apple will add another dedicated store for the new phone like they did for the iPad.

Oh, no question that an app designed for this res will look great... as long as it is designed for the iPhone size as well as the new resolution. Much finer detail will be the great, but it will also be a processor burden. It will also be interesting to see how an app designed at the higher res will work ... or not work ... with a current generation device.

Oh, and yes, I think using HD in an iPad title is NOT a good idea.

Lucky all my game's graphics are generally 16x16 sprites then... I have to UPSCALE them... gotta love retro blockiness ;)

I don't remember where I read this, but its supposed to have EXACTLY 4 times the pixels.... so for every pixel that you have it will make that color 4 times.... so it should look exactly the same when comparing a 4g/ HD to a 3gs or 3g if all the artworks the same

    @c1s, That sounds logical...

    FakeEdit: It actually is correct!

Any response from Gendai regarding 960x640 resolution for future GameSalad development?

Waiting with anticipation to hear about this!

Big picture update is supposed to be coming before the weekend.

I suspect the new resolution will be in v0.8.8. Also...I might add, the 3GS has been removed from sale by Apple and should be dwindling in number over the next year.

It's still on their store though:

Aren't they just keeping the 8Mb model so the entry level price is $99??

I think he meant to say the 3G

They are keeping the 3GS at $99 for 8GB according to the Keynote from Jobs himself.

Seeing how awesome iPhone 4 is, I cant imagine what iPhone 6 will be like!

I still have my Newton somewhere. Now that was a device!!!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton_(platform)

Given that the new iPhones use the A4 chip, and my game works much better on the iPad's chip, I'm seriously considering only releasing for these devices. My game is too slow on a 3G and I don't have a 3GS to test on. It's certainly safer to build for the future at least. Something to think about anyway.

Hm. Do you now change the graphics, screens, etc. for your games? Steve Jobs meant "with some extra work" games would look brilliant on an iPhone 4?!
  • EastboundEastbound Member, BASIC Posts: 1,074
Gendai, please make it to where we can bundle versions for different devices! I don't care about universal games for iPhone/iPad, but iPhone 4/Old iPhone resolutions need to be included in the same file...
