Without this happening:

Scale your images before importing them into GS.

    Any advice on doing that?

if you use something like photoshop you want to change the image size but use 'nearest neighbor' as the resample algorithm. it will preserve hard edges.

We do nearly all of our i mages in illustrator so we can easily up scale them with no loss of quality.

I do what dayofjackal does, usually create all of my artwork in Illustrator (as vector art) then import, touch-up and export as png from Photoshop.

If you have a budget and absolutely have to up-size pixel art this product works great:

I use it at my graphic design studio all the time to enlarge images for oversized output.

If you haven't got Photoshop then go to http://www.sumopaint.com/app/

Open your image from your computer, go into Image > Image Size - enter your new image dimension and turn smoothing off.

One you are happy with the result save the file to your computer.

Over at DeepBlueApps.com we have a tool that'll help you SCALE up your 1x images - the results can be quite good. As the others have pointed out it's always best to START WITH the 2x or 4x artwork/images, then scale down. However if this is not an option, then the tools described above may help you scale them up (Photoshop, SumoPaint etc)...

But if you want a quick, simple and cheap way - then our PNG INSPECTOR PRO tool can do this for you (and lots of other nifty tricks too!)

We're giving the PRO version away for FREE for the next 7 days - so if you want grab a copy and give it a go, head over to our site, select the pro version and enter the promo code BIGGERBUNNY at the checkout - after selecting the Pro Version. It usually costs £3.

    Other features of the tool:

    - Upscale / resample your images (1x,x, 3x etc)
    - Add HD suffix details to file names
    - Process whole folder or single images
    - Add watermarks to your images.
    - Auto add/subtract pixels to your PNG files to avoid blurry images in iOS game.
    - Force the resolution of your PNG files to 72 dpi.
    - Apply compression to your PNG files to save space.
    - Automatically adjust the bit depth, depending on masks, palettes and colour schemes.
    - Visually see potential issues in the interface.
    - Double click images in the list to open.
    - See a preview of your image and the mask extracted.
    - Zoom in/out to see your images closer.
