expression editor for windows

I am trying to use the expression editor in gamesalad for windows but having a lot of problems. Whenever I type out an expression it never works, I can only get it to work if I copy and paste from another template. Looking at the code I cant see any difference between what I am typing and what I am copying and pasting. It's got me baffled.
I am sure its something I am doing wrong, is there a tutorial or site that outlines the syntax that should be used in the expression editor. I have looked but cant seem to find anything (again I suspect I am just not looking in the right places).
