Simple Pause Feature

Well, it had to happen, right?

Can we please have a simple pause system please?

This used to be the case with the 'preserve previous scene' function when changing scene. It perfectly preserved the action as you went to the new scene, so it was exactly the same when you returned to the previous scene.

Essentially it 'paused' the action, and required just one or two clicks to implement. Brilliant.

Since the .8 release, this has been deprecated, and the proposed 'workaround' is far far far too complicated, especially if you have multiple actors using multiple timers.

Trying to 'work around' the issue is demotivating and stifles creativity. I should be worrying about how my actors are going to move, what they'll do when they reach their destination, when they'll fire etc etc - not 'How am I going to pause this guy?'.

The worst thing is that we *used* to have this feature, and it worked fine. I've decided not to update older apps as their pause functionality will be compromised.

Please can we have a SIMPLE pause feature in as soon as possible. We're making MOBILE games. Our customers are out and about in the wild, with a million things that can distract them. They should be able to pause our games whenever and wherever they are.

Thanks,

QS :D

Most games need a [Pause] function (unless it's a game with `cough` - Dolls in it!)
This should be a basic requirement, and as QS mentioned it was 'kinda' there in older versions.

any demos using that functionality? we could just reduce an existing demo to a "pause capable" template.

Hmmm I was thinking and I think they said if your game was made in the version that had it then the feature will still be there when u load the game to do an update. Could u not start all games with that version then open them in the new one? I think I still have that version but I'll have to check.

Do you mean the version of GS, or the version of a game?

I'm pretty sure it's not quite as simple as you make out though, mate ;)

    Cheers,

    QS

i just checked and can confirm starting a game in an old update with preserve scene and opening in 0.8 does not work. :( sorry QS

I thought as much mate, as you can see from my other post!

(just make sure you click 'like' on the original post. As Wayne (and myself on *numerous* occasions) has said, it's a 'standard feature that's essential and that we used to have'.

BTW, let me just take this opportunity to thank the GS guys for putting in this forum feature. It'll help track progress and makes us feel like you're listening. So thanks!

This feature would also make a lot of sense in regards to the upcoming iPhone OS 4. By default OS 4 wants the ability to save state when a game is quit since keeping a game running in the background doesn't really make sense. I think with OS 4 more and more users will become used to the idea that when they quit a game by hitting the home button it won't actually "quit" but rather save state. Having a simple, universal pause feature in GS that supports saving state on quit would be huge.

Couldn't agree more. Though rather than it being 'huge', I'd say it'd be 'necessary' ;)

I would love a pause function. Very useful for those that need it.

I've noticed a lot of GS games lately have *tried* to implement pause, but certain issues arise.

Also, with IOS4, a pause feature seems to be an even greater priority!

    Cheers,

I can't believe there is no pause function...I am so far in my game and I just ran into this problem. I thought it would be so simple...why doesn't "moveable = false" stop actors?

Customers require a pause feature. It's too basic not to have. Should be a high priority item.

Any news on this? I notice the last post was 3 months ago. Has there been any breakthroughs pertaining to the implementation of pause within games? Any good workaround (or crappy one?) I tried the demo of the workaround, but I can't seem to download the project (I posted this issue in another thread... can't download any projects).

I've been helping bug test the recent build a bit.

    I've tested Pause.

It took me one minute to implement.

    ONE MINUTE.

I'm very much looking forward to it finally going *back* into my games :D
