Icon for App Store, 57X57 or 512X512

I'm reading various things on the internet about what size the icon for the app store needs to be. Someone told me that you need both a 512X512 size icon, and 57X57 ...

What size should the icon be? And what about uploading screenshots etc?

You need both 512x512 and 57x57. It'd be best to make the big one first then downsize it after. Screenshots are submitted as 480x320 .png images, the same resolution as they are played at on your iPhone. To take screenshots on your iPhone, press the home and power button at the same time.

Also, there's no need to add the shiny effect to your icons. Apple does that automatically in the OS.

Also, bear in mind that you don't particularly have to have the name of your game on the icon. It'd be real hard to read legibly at 57x57 anyway, and the name of your game would go under the icon on your iphone automatically.

Try and make it visually arresting - it doesn't have to be an exact visual representation of the game you're making. You can be a bit abstract as well!

Have a look at other icons on the app store, and see what you think works and what doesn't.

All of this advice is from other sites I've been reading on the internet. We're (mostly) all in the same boat and doing this for the first time!

    Good luck all!

Is the shiny effect something that can be bypassed? I have a few apps on my phone that don't have it, think it might be better for what I'm working on.

There is a way to turn off the effects on icons, check out this wiki page:

    http://gamesalad.com/wiki/control_iphone_icon_sheen

As long as it has rounded corners and 'looks at home' on the iPhone screen, it won't be a problem for approval.

Why a 512 X 512 and what format do they need to be?

It needs to be 512x512 so that GameSalad can Resize it to the several different sizes that may be required. It needs to be a .png and 72 DPI like all other Art. Also you will need to provide Apple with a 512x512 icon so thats prob another reason it needs to be that way.

This Thread is a Year old so i'm closing it.

Actually this thread does not have valid information as it is from a time when you had to have both a 512x512 and a 57x57 to publish with GameSalad. But now you only need the 512x512 So i cleared that part up and closed it so noone else would get confused by further discussing it in this thread because my experience is people open a thread and read the first post and never look all the way to the end to see if any of the info changed. Unless of coarse its closed then they look to see why. So essentially reopening the thread sets more people up for confusion than just leaving it be. I even added an explaination of why i thought GameSalad Choose 512x512 Since that was actually the question he had bumped the thread with in the first place.

    So Im Closing this again.

@Braden - if you have more questions about this topic feel free to open a fresh thread to discuss it with only current information.

Even better, This would be a great question to ask in the cookbook.
