Hey Apple - this sucks!

So lately - fellow developers have been handing out some free codes for us to try out their game. Some have stated with the proviso that we give a review - it's hard to get them these days and it's the least that can be done for a free app.

So there it is - whether you ask or not I have gone to make a review. And I get the error popping up saying this...

"Error: You must own or download this item to write a Customer Review"

What? I think.

Oh well, weird.

Then try again...

Same error!?!?

http://forums.imore.com/apps-games/225736-error-you-must-own-item-write-customer-review.html

goes into it.

So sorry to those who have given out codes - it breaks the app store review process.

Stink one Apple.

It has been this way for a long time. My understanding is that this was done in an attempt to prevent fake reviews but I might be remembering incorrectly.

You can't review a game if you've been given a promo code. It's not an error, it's Apple law.

I'd say this makes perfect sense. Obviously from a developer standpoint we'd love to get free reviews for sending out promo codes, but from Apple's stand point it's opening up the system for every dev to get their friends and family to create false positive reviews, undermining the credibility of the whole review system. I'd rather be able to trust the reviews I see of other apps, rather than have to assume many of them are fake.

    edit: 500th post woohoo!

Yep it seems to be the case - silly of me to be so innocent and righteous when there's so many asshats in the world that stuff it up for everyone. So I see the point - but here's my issue.

Apple -their errors, and their warning instructions are atrocious.

The error should say - exactly what it means. 'You cannot review this app because it was purchased with a promotional code'

The error has made me ask this question. If the error said what it really meant then I would have not thought it was a bug.

It's like when you plug an iPhone in to another iTunes to sync and it says it is going to erase your phone. It won't, it's just the itunes content.

Their syntax, on errors at times is dumbfounding.

Thanks for the heads up - I have never heard or experienced this until now - after owning iPhones since the 3G that is saying something!

Yeah you're totally right in my opinion, when Apple usually pride themselves on being user friendly and intuitive there's no excuse for their error messages not to explain things in basic understandable language.

Its been this way for a long time. At one point you could leave a review with a promo code as long as the code was redeemed from iTunes on your computer and not the device. not sure if that is still the case.

but yeah basically the way things where going is all the crappy apps where having 40-50 5 star reviews the day the app released
