Hey mate, I use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for most of my graphics (pretty much the industry standards), but I understand that these are expensive. If that is an issue I'm sure some people on here will be able to suggest some alternatives :)

They have different strengths and weaknesses and are really designed for different tasks. Sometimes the best solution can also be to use both together.

Illustrator is ideal for really clean smooth lines, buttons and interface, logos etc. The best part is that vector graphics are infinitely scalable so you don't have to worry about resolution while you create. Photoshop is better for more natural looking art, sketches, more realistic shading, pixel art, etc. Often I will create my lines in illustrator and then move into photoshop for colouring/shading. Really it comes down to the style you want.

You don't really need a tablet for illustrator/vector graphics (a matter of personal preference) but it is definitely very handy to get one if you are serious about painting/drawing in photoshop.

99% of my graphics are created in illustrator and most animations done in toon boom animate. I'd say get a wacom tablet too as makes creating art so much easier. With things like toon boom keep an eye out on their site as they often have promotions. There was one last week with 60% off the price. I think its finished now though but still worth a look
