Gamesalad RPG

arevelarevel Member, PRO Posts: 2
Hi everybody!

I know this question has been going around for some time but I haven't got a real response yet, how do I create an RPG type game? Does someone here has a tutorial or a hint were to start?

On the other hand I would like to know if someone here has bought the pro version for students and how did that go?

Thanks a lot for your time.

You won't often get real responses when you ask how to make a game. Most of us will only help when you're stuck on a particular problem.

I'd recommend starting something much simpler if it's your first project in GameSalad.

its pretty much the same as any other game... just make your walk area..make your story...make talk bubbles that pop up for the story... and add good people and enimies along the way

wont be as easy as i make it seem but thats how it goes, other then the code that would be pretty hard but that template would be awesome!

Maybe give some examples of the features you'd like to have? or some examples of games you'd like it to be like? Eg Final Fantasy, Pokemon, Zelda...?

In my tutorial collection ive saved from youtube and my various searches around there is no strict tutorial for making an RPG, however there might be some tutorials for creating some aspects of the RPG you wish to create .

If you are still keen, Id defiantly recommend you consider buying the template, it might be worth the investment to give you a head start.

Creating an RPG takes a lot of work, don't expect a decent RPG to take less than 1.5-2 yrs. The reason for this is RPGS are very system heavy. You would need some if not all of the following depending on RPG sub genre etc:

    1. Stats system Characters
    2. Exp system
    3. Equipment system
    4. Inventory
    5. Battle system
    6. Enemy AI
    7. Abilities system
    8. Movement system
    9. NPC AI
    10. Options Menu
    11. Save system
    12. Currency system
    13. Merchanting or Aquisition system
    14. Loot System
    15. Enemy Stats system
    16. Puzzles
    17. Mini-Games
    18. Map system
    19. a TON of graphics
    20. Some more Graphics
    21. Dialogue system (GS isnt very good at this right now)
    21. Quest tracking system or progression tracking
    22. Possible party system
    23. Crafting system
    24. Custom text system
    25. Cutscene system

And that's probably not all encompassing. Some of these are easier than others, and of course you could always go smaller scale. Like I said above, Gs isn't very good for dialogue right now, and custom text systems are fairly memory intensive. It's also going to require being creative when trying to create some systems. Tables are a huge help for RPG's since a lot of what goes on is data processing (such as storing inventory, stats, level, scene, X,Y's etc). Knowing some math will help out for equations that can be used for exp, or stats. Oh and be prepared to optimize often.

Starting with zanda is a good place to go for sure. Remember to approach things one at a time. You can break down the above system into even further sub-systems to tackle in smaller bites. If you get stuck on a problem, work on another system or ask around the forums if your really stuck. Google is your friend when you need to search for a specific rule or system. GS can def be used to make a good RPG, with enough time, effort, and knwoledge.

The JRPG at GS may be more difficult as a first timers but I am sure we can overcome a lot of problems someday. I am as well want to create this kind of game like tales of in 2d version in no time after create few similar games.

@CodeMonster - Can you please take down that link to your site for a paid template, and instead, post a link to just the youtube video? You can't advertise your own paid assets on your website on the GameSalad forums.

How can you make a multi-line in a dialogue box? Can I make those message appear by letter to letter instead of appears at once if you know what I am saying?
