Creating a simple app, rather than a game in GS

Hi!

While I love GS and are working on some cool games,
I am also wondering if it's possible to create a simple app with a lot of text, rather than a game.

I'd like to create an app where the audience can easily search between different categories that I've created, with text. Like a wiki-app or something similar. While I at the same time could easily update it and add more content later on.

So I'm wondering if I can create this easily in GS or if I should rather learn coding and make it with XCode. I'm guessing it would take ages of time to add text attributes and update them in GS, or am I wrong?

Thanks for hearing me out and pardon my annoying grammar :)

Sincerely
Nicolay

Hello Nicolay and welcome to the Forums. :-) And no worries, your grammar is fine.

Other types of apps other than games are no problem to create in GSC although there are limitations compared with a coded app... for instance, images can't be imported by the user, no linking with external databases, etc, etc. But for straightforward self-contained utility/educational, etc., type of apps, in the main it's fine.

By the way, non-game apps doesn't necessarily mean simpler.... ;-)

Once you've got your app published and in the store, you can update it anytime you want to amend or add more content. You then just republish it as an updated app.

I'm not sure how many text attributes you are thinking of using but at a guess, it wouldn't take "ages of time" to add them... anyway, app creation in GSC can take anywhere from one week to 3 years! (Depending on the complexity of it and/or how often it's worked on...)

You could learn about Xcode and Objective-C but to become proficient in this to the level of reproducing the sort of stuff you can program in GSC without any coding, would be at least 2-3 years, I'm thinking, if not even longer. (expecially if you're new to any coding). It's not what anyone would could call "easy".

Back to GSC, if you've not been using it for long, have you gone through the Cookbook and the Manual? If not, you'll find them very beneficial.

OK, best of luck with making your text-only app and fire away with any more questions you have, of course.

Hi Gyroscope and thanks for superior feedback! :)

I don't really need any images, so then it shouldn't be a problem in GS after all. I just want to have different categories with text (figured I could create a scene for each one) and a scrolling bar.

But I will definitely read more from the Cookbook and watch your Youtube tutorials :)
GS got so much potential! Anyways, thanks for awesome feedback and keep up the good job with this fantastic program!

Hi, @gyroscope wasn't saying pictures weren't possible or hard, he was saying how the user of your app can't access their photo library and load photos into your app while they're using it. There are some features like that that GameSalad can't yet deal with yet.

Adding pictures to your app to tart it up while you're building it is a really easy thing to do which you'll see when you go through the cookbook and any tutorials you find :)

Good luck with your app :)

You need to change your username, because of the full stops in your name you cant reply, see what I mean? @nicolay.dahlgren@gmail.com your name stops at the "." so you will never know if someone replies to you.

I created a simple text app and it was rejected by the app store %-(

Just wanted to let you know that you need to include many features that can appeal to users, otherwise you won't be able to publish it to the app store.

Features that make it different to use a mobile device rather than a website.
Unfortunately GS does not have so many that should be implemented into a "good app". Its great for creating games though. Anyway I'm still trying... 8-|

GS is limited but you have to push your imagination and stretch the limits of what GS can do. It is possible to make successful 'non-games' with GS.
