I signed up and downloaded today. Very impressed with GameSalad!
In just a few minutes I had some working buttons etc. Several days last week I had time to view some tutorials, but i don't see any for a simple board game, ie: you click on a piece, click on a square, and it moves there if vacant, otherwise like chess it tries to win an opponent piece if its present. Like checkers or chess the piece has movement restrictions (i can see thats going to be some fun to set up!)
I'm an expert at finding the hardest ways to do everything, but that might be the only way to go (such as setting up the entire gameboard as active square characters, one square at a time, so the pieces have something to latch to.) Is there an easier way or does anyone know of tutorials that can help get me going with this project?

How about something simpler first since it's going to be your first game?
Just a couple simple projects to get your feet wet. For a game like Chess, you'd probably want your feet soaked, though.
