Constraining an object to x,y and mouse drag

So all of the examples of constrain with drag and x,y constrain basically SNAP an object to the constraint. I want to be able to drag an actor on two single planes. if the actor were in the middle of the screen I would like to be able to only drag it up and down 240-0 & 240-480 and side to side from the center of the screen 160-0 & 160-320. Can anyone give any advice on this?

I'd have to think about this one. It would seem difficult to get back to the exact center to change from one plane to the other.

Perhaps if in the very center there was a small square area that the object could move in any direction and if it left that area it would snap to the plane in the direction it left.

Thats what I would like to constrain the drag to without it snapping. Not sure how this might be possible, but if some of you GS geniuses can figure it out Id be grateful.

Do you need the actor to be able to move up and down AND side to side without releasing it?

Or can it be either one or the other?
So if I click the Actor, and I start dragging, can it now only move up or down OR side to side?

Or when I am dragging the actor, and I come to the intersection, am I able to change direction?

    Does that make sense?

How did that file work for you?

What about it would make it better?

Firemaple...yes an intersection is what I need. IE: the center of the screen is the intersection and I want to be able to drag it up and down along 160 vertically and 240 horizontally. when I get to the center I should be able to switch directions.
