Can gameplay be copied?

On behalf of all the private message asking for help, here is a question for you all (so they can see it from other people as well)

Can a gameplay be copied?

Ever since flat design became a thing, a few members, including myself were liking the new games that were coming out. Such as letter press, dots, roll ect.
But one thing I noticed was, besides letter press, a lot of these games were simply copies of over games already on the AppStore. The only thing that was different was the graphics and the simplistic design.
I didn't really think of it at first until it was pointed out that they just took the gameplay from a different game.

Which begs the question, can a gameplay be copied from a older game and be released with the new flat design?
Considering there will be different graphics, design, but still pass as a new game?
A perfect example that comes to mind is Dots: a game about connecting.
I don't think people really knew that the gameplay was not something new.

if its the exact same game just with a change in art and its paid, it will most defiantly get your customers annoyed, so in my opinion i would never do that.

If gameplay could not be copied, then there would only be 50 games on the app store not 500 million,lol.

I'm copying gameplay on the project I'm working on. I'm adding more to it but it's basically already a heavily cloned game.

A lot of people including myself can't come up with a completely original idea. Should we give up developing and leave it to the small handful of people that can churn out dozens of original ideas?! I hope not, because I enjoy doing this!

yeah. the only "original ideas i could make is a game that is just a loading screen to waste time.
