HELP! Can't control acceleration when jumping

I have an actor who uses a "jump" rule which increases his linear velocity by 1000, he jumps fine up and down. But when you try and move left or right and jump at the same time he accelerates in the air very fast. I would like to somehow slow down his movement while he is in the air or make a more believe movement.
