Menus with multiple sub-menus

I have a main menu that allows you to access "area 1" The other "areas" are all locked.

When you beat all the levels in area1, the main menu will unlock "area2" which has more levels and the process repeats.

My problem is this... when you beat the last game in a level, the main menu doesn't unlock the next area.
The only way to see the next unlocked level is to enter "area1" and then leave "area1" .. only then does the second level appear unlocked. It's almost like it needs to leave the page and return so it can refresh??? I'm new to this so bare with me and any help would be appreciated!

Are you unlocking the next level and saving your unlocked levels/areas via a table at the end of each level before you go back to area select?

This is the method i used for our world map template below but like tatiang said some more info would be good.
