Help setting up android viewer

I have been following the Cookbook to set up the android viewer and I'm stuck on the bottom half of page 3 http://cookbook.gamesalad.com/tutorials/4/parts/18 I managed to verify my device using command "~/sdk/platform-tools/adb devices" in step 3. But I can not get steps 4 & 5 to work.
I have the "GSViewer.apk" in my Downloads folder and none of the commands work. I am new to Apple computers and I have a new iMac. I typed in "cd ~/downloads" it returns "No such file or directory" and "~/downloads" gets "downloads is a directory".
"~/sdk/platform_tools/adb install GameSalad-Android_GSViewer.apk" and many variations returns "No such file or directory". Can someone help get me past this point?

The viewer file I downloaded for Nightly Build 145 is "GSViewer.apk". How do I change the command line "~/sdk/platform_tools/adb install GameSalad-Android_Viewer-0.10.01-beta.apk" from the Cookbook to work with "GSViewer.apk" in my downloads folder? I have tried a few combos but nothing has worked so far.

GameSalad could do with updating the walkthrough for Android Kitkat (and Jellybean) ... finding the appropriate buttons to access the developer options and turn on USB debugging has changed... I had to go into settings on my device, scroll down to 'about phone' and tap on 'Build number' 7 times, it then popped up saying 'you are now a developer' and developer options were then available in settings.
