How to avoid bad performance (processor heavy stuff)?

HI all,
I've only started playing around in Gamesalad creator 2 days ago (loving it so far!!),
and planning to buy the Express version as soon as I receive my tax return in maybe a month or so, yáááy!! (Then I also have access to the viewer and know if my frame rate is going nuts)
I've already come to understand using constraints slows down performance.
So there's one thing to avoid using too much.
Would you guys have more tips and pointers to specific things which should
be avoided as much as possible to ensure a game runs smoothly?
Are there any rules of thumb maybe?
It would be nice to have a bit of an idea of limitations I might run into (as a complete noob)
before seriously diving in and bumping my head like an idiot and get discouraged.
I'm hoping this post might eventually help any newbies like myself to get started
with a better understanding of what to expect and what not.
Thanks a lot people!!

By 'actors that are not seen', you mean actors that for example only indicate a clickable area (no graphics involved), right?
About Audio, would you recommend certain settings? I mean, low quality I understand,
but where's the limit not to fall into the horribly low quality section? (I guess it's more a matter of using my ears in this case, trail & error)
Thanks again!
in case I DO want to use an animated background, would an animated GIF work,
or does it have to be a PNG image sequence?
