Game Graphics - What's Your Opinion?

I'm just wandering what your opinion is on game graphics. Does it necessarily matter if there are simple graphics provided the game has a simple concept? For example, for a multi-level shooting game you wouldn't want your character to just be a green square, but for a one-arena game (the concept of mine being a dodge style game) would a very simple graphic matter? Hopefully this made sense.

Graphics should make sense. They don't have to be done by Rembrandt or De Gaulle, but they should be consistent. You can make them with a crayon, but the colors need to go together, and the art style consistent. I've seen more than a few hundred games that the art is all over the place. You can tell they just Googled what they needed and took the first thing that showed up. Colors should flow together, and not be too contrasting.

Simple or complex, they need to work together with other graphics in your game. Even the user interface needs to be in line with the gameplay graphics as far as style and color.

    That's just my half-awake opinion.

If you want to see some simple style games done with GameSalad then there's games like Impossible Dodge - Squ4re - then get some more character in there with Lub vs Dub - then even more with Brave Bit.

From squares to circles, there's WingDot - Simple Game and 321 Boom.

There's another game on the forums not released yet in this style which is being blogged about while in development. That's called Shade > http://frazz3l.tumblr.com/

But as you will notice these games play on the art style and do it well.

They should be some good examples for you :)

    Cheers, M@
