Test phone for Android

I've been an iPhone only guy for a while now. I have no idea where to start with looking for a TESTing phone for android.
I guess where I'm confused is the fact that there are different Android phone makes.
Any advice on a good test Android phone (make and model)? and preferably cheap….. I'm going to eBay one. Thanks
