Driving traffic the biggest part of getting downloads?

I'm a newb here, originally found my place here about a year ago, and been flirting with the idea of developing App games for a while. Anyhow, what has been pretty obvious to me about the App business is that the best quality does not necessarily equal quality sales/download numbers. And my biggest fear is that I will spend loads of time and maybe money on developing something good and that is goes no where. So if you build it they will not come if you will. There is another part of this, now obviously every success or failure story is a tad different and takes into account different variables. But my question for the veterans in this business around here is what part does marketing play in the success of a game app?

I bring this up because I am a Internet marketer I make money online everyday by driving traffic/marketing stuff. So I wonder how much impact I could have on driving traffic to a game, (which I think matters almost as much as anything). Specially I rank websites on search engines and what if I could do this for my game? I mean you see clone games all the time one that gets tons of downloads one that does not that are the same game quality wise, one just takes off because it gets traffic in some form.

By the way, at least initially I would only be interested in putting out free games monetized by ads, as this is what I do already. And I think it has the biggest potential money making wise.

Marketing is the single most important part of the process if you ask me, most people hate it because they don't know what to do or what works but sounds like you have a head start with your day job so I say go for it, make a simple free game with ads and see what happens.
