Oculus Rift

Completely off topic, but wondering it anybody has bought an Oculus Rift development kit? I don't mean for developing, but just out of curiosity to try it.

I've been tempted for months and after hearing that they're stopping sales for a while because of part shortages I'm tempted to take the plunge. The videos I've watched have got me feeling like a kid again.

Yeah, I could get into that until I trip on my cat and end up in the hospital.

Yeah we have one at my work. It's definitely fun to play with but I have to admit that I was really surprised by how low rez it seemed. My son tells me that the ones they were selling are only 480p (yuck), but the newer ones are supposed to be 1080p. That would have made the look and feel sooooo much better. I'd definitely wait i I were you.

@tatiang Just play sat down! Although I nearly break my neck daily because of the cat without a VR headset.

@wpaten yeah I know, but it could be a long time until a new development kit and still no date for consumer version. It's tempting just with it being quite cheap for a kit that gives you an experience of something completely new. If it was more than the £200 I wouldn't be considering, but the development kit excites me more than the next gen consoles!

That does look stunning. To be fair though, I'm sold on ANY Oculus game set in Space!

@BBEnk I was reading this morning, the jist I got was they're happy leaving them to it though. Weird one though isn't it? Any compulsory Facebook integration and I'll be swayed to Sony's one. Can't see it though.

i cannot imagine this is going to be good for your health. i imagine many people blind with lower brain function from the daily use of these things. not to mention the lawsuits.

Its amazing looking but my god the long term effects cannot be a good thing.

    Blind?!

Completely disagree with the health thing. People said exactly the same thing about computer games.

You'd have to play seriously to excess for any ill effects and even then, pretty sure if you felt bad effects - you're not going to carry on.

But I didn't look at it as that type of thing anyway - More the thing you would play every now and again for twenty minutes to experience it. I've never been the kind of person to play a game for hours so maybe I'm looking at differently.

I starred at the order page for ages the other day, weighing up whether I could justify buying one.

I know I want one to play with, and would probably never even get close to developing for it.

Guess I'll wait and see... would love to have a go with one if one for 2 minutes.

Your not a "Real" gamer then now are you. People waste their lives away in front on console games. I think the only reason I don't have an issue with that is my wife would be yelling at me that I have been playing to long.

I can see with this thing people actually playing till they collapse from not eating or drinking anything. Your immersed in that world with it on you can't tell me you you don't see the possibility of overuse. Especially by children who are not fortunate enough to have parents that actually pay attention and monitor what their kids are and have been doing.

I'll buy consumer version and I plan to make a project with Oculus support.

Fair enough, but I think the overall positives and possibilities of VR technology massively overshadow any negative effects they might have on a small handful of obsessive people.

Hahahaha you must not know any real gamers. They are all obsessive and in massive numbers.

I certainly think the tech is cool. I just see a further downfall in our society with this tech moving into people's homes.

I mean my god have you not seen the movie Surrogates!!!

But those 'real gamers' are still a minority in the grand scheme of things.

No matter what the entertainment product though there's always going to be the obsessive who puts it before anything else in their life - Whether that's movies, games, watching sport or whatever.

Not sure about the 'further downfall of society' bit. Personally don't think society is on a downfall - I'd prefer to live now than a hundred years ago!

@tenrdrmer‌ p.s I do know what you mean about an Orwellian future though! But f*ck it, I want me some VR!

Not seen Surrogates but I did just watch 'Her' which was a weird one.

I gave in! Managed to grab an original dev kit on eBay for now instead of waiting for the second one.

Played the Titans of Space demo and for a few seconds when I looked down and saw my body I genuinely thought I was looking at my own arms haha. So surreal.

Never experienced anything like it and I'm excited about where the tech will head, even with Facebook involved...

@mcrtom I'm very envious... well done.

Just checked and there are a lot for sale on ebay.. I guess so many people ordered one just to see what it was like rather than having any intention to possibly develop for it. Then soon got bored, or they've loved it so much, they're selling the old one to fund the purchase of a new one.

  • mcrtommcrtom Member, PRO Posts: 147

@StormyStudio‌ I thought it was pointless checking eBay at first because the bids were getting too high on every listing in the Uk, but then managed to catch one listed at a decent 'but it now' price and impulse took over!

Finally gave in on this... Just pressed the pre-order button and paid £270 ish.

'The Aliens' game looks too damn awesome and I just want to see what all the fuss is about... oh and I really want to build something for it too obviously.
