retaining momentum of actor after swapping actors.

Can anyone tell me how this is achieved?, i have an actor like the ship in the space rocks tutorial. Im basically trying to implement a shield which is a separate actor that is spawned when the original is destroyed for 2 seconds that retains the momentum of the original actor. Probably something to do with change velocity but i'm not sure...
