Gamesalad for App Creation (not games)?

Conifer_AppsConifer_Apps Member Posts: 100

I've been working with Xcode as well as Gamesalad for quite some time now, and honestly, I'm still not nearly as good at Xcode as I am at Gamesalad in terms of making interactive features. The nice part about Xcode is that it has a whole array of UI standards, transitions, and features that Gamesalad doesn't have, but of course Xcode is much older, and I'm sure that stuff will come to Gamesalad.

Again, with Xcode, it's much easier to achieve an iOS 7 look and feel.

I guess I'm wondering what your experiences are with making apps with Gamesalad, and if it would be worth my time to start making everything, not just games, on Gamesalad. Also, if you could post some links to apps made by Gamesalad for me to take a look at, that would be great.

Hi, thanks for the link, that look mightily useful and helps all of us to not have to "reinvent the wheel".

I've published 3 apps so far, and two of them are utility apps... I know I'm not alone here either in using GameSalad for non-game stuff... the only things missing that would perhaps be needed for highly sophisticated utility apps would be things like text or image import/export, connection to external databases, live updates, etc, etc.

But there's more than enough behaviours, etc in GSC to produce some quite interesting stuff that's not a game, I think. And as you mentioned as well, it can only get better.

Btw, if you'd like to take a look at my two utility apps, just for interest, you can find the links to the iTunes store on my website (shown below).

The vast majority of apps made with GameSalad are games but it would be a mistake to assume that because of that proportion or because of the name "GameSalad" it's not powerful enough or not designed for making non-game apps. It's all there if you are sophisticated at using database structures and logic.

That and any time someone asks a complex question on the forums there is almost always someone smart enough to figure out how to solve it! :)

Yes game salad is basically a logic based coding environment. Think of it as Legos you can build whatever your imagination can think of.

Thanks guys - I'll give it a go. Here's another cool ios 7 blur gradient that I've been using. It essentially just blurs a picture that you provide. http://dribbble.com/shots/1109921-iOS7-Blur-Photoshop-Action

If you check the spare code thread I uploaded a project that lets you achieve a similar effect to that without pre-processing your images. It's not as good as the real thing, but it's not too shabby!

I've reproduced enough of these kinds of things now for my own amusement that I considered making a template of "app" effects that mimic the Apple look and feel. Perhaps I should get around to that some time.

@Armelline‌ - can you post a link to your project? Or better yet post it here. I'd like to take a look at it. Thanks!
