Particles & FPS

Hey guys--

My game currently has about 10 actors using particles usually at once, mainly for things like snow and sparkles for shiny objects. I tested an ad hoc on my iPhone 5 and performance seems to be just fine, but on the iPhone 4 and older generation iPads my game is extremely laggy, and removing all particle behaviors seems to improve performance on those devices significantly.

Has anyone experienced the same issue, and if so, are there any optimization tips for particles? Worst comes to worse I guess I could live without them, but they do add a nice touch to the game visually.
