Screenshots templates

One of the most important thing you have to take into account when advertising your game is the screenshots. All of my games have the "generic ones" without any edition in ps, illustrator, etc. I was wondering if there is any tool to create fancy screenshots or a photoshop template. If you don´t know what I´m talking about, see the example below:

As a downloader of games, I personally hate this type of screen shot. If I'm trying to decide if I want to download a game the last thing I want is to be told the game description again in big letters blocking the picture of the game itself. I want to see the actual game.

I suspect I'm in a minority with that though.

Well it is always good to know the point of view of everyone, I will take that into account and add a survey to the post. Can any moderator help me on doing this?

I don't mind how the game is presented, if the gameplay and the graphics are awesome.

However, I think that eye-catching screenshot must have an effect. I do like the example screenshot you've posted.

@Armelline, I tend to agree with you. Also I prefer game play videos that actually show game play and not a bunch of flying titles and spinning iPhones.

The ones for Run Roo Run are pretty good examples. No make-up, but there's enough to let the player know what he's getting.

Attractive 1st screenshot which very well might have been lifted from the in-game intro.
2nd screenshot that shows the story of the game in a fun way.
Informative 3rd screenshot that tells you: the game's setting, the fact that there are Free levels, and possibly game length.
And finally, 4th and 5th screenshots that show gameplay + some in-game features.

Not endorsing the game, just the first thing to pop in my mind (even before my own titles :\ ).

edit: and yes, including a short well-made video is a must.

I agree - this is a good compromise. The added text doesn't detract from the screen shot, the image isn't all "at an angle", and no important information is being blocked.

Will be taking inspiration from them for my next game's release :D

I have only made a few bad to middling games, I can say though that I believe that the first screenshot makes all the difference. I went to school for graphic design so this kind of stuff comes very easy to me. When I put my first game out PLOCKS (the free version) I used the same generic screenshots for the .99 version that didn't really show what the game was about. I rocked those screen shots for about a month before changing them up to something that was much more informative to the players. My idea was to try to show how the game played inside the static screenshot. My free game downloads with the new screenshots more than tripled in downloads. I figure you only have a few seconds before they decide to download your app or move on to the next one that has a snazzier more appealing set of screenshots.

Here are a few examples of screenshots I made:

Thank you very much for the opinions, I will strongly take them into account. Do you know any templates for photoshop which would help me on doing this? I know how to use ps but i´m not a good designer so my screenshots would probably look awful

This is the kind of thing I like, quick easy descriptions on a preview, but still actual game footage.... Thought I'd Share

I always search a video if I'm interested in a game then make up my mind but pretty screenshots don't hurt.
