Hi guys, the actual saying is "Necessity is the mother of invention" as you probably know but I borrowed and amended it

I've been wanting something for more organisation to my Mac desktop for years; where I can group and label files and folders all on the same desktop.

And really gone for it this early evening and after spending over an hour and a half searching, I finally honed in and tracked down exactly what I was after which, I think, personally fits the bill - it's called Desktop Groups:

If you use it, I hope you find it as useful as I think it's going to be!

(They've also got an app called Desktop Shelves which looks to be good and worth checking out as well...)

P.S In my "investigations" I came across a similar program for Windows, called Fences, might interest some of you:

Cheers, Jon, yes, it does look cool, doesn't it.... although I've a little niggling worry now I've investigated it further... there aren't any folders in the groups on the desktop, only files shown as examples on the site.... surely you can include folders in the groups as well... if not, that's a bit crazy...

Anyhow, I'm downloading the 7 day trial now so I'll check back here (unless you beat me to it! )

Fascinating. Looks like it could save me tons of time (I'm a messy Mac file person)!
    Thanks for sharing, Dave!

Hope it works for ya. I used some app of hack or something to hide all desktop icons so my desktop looks nice and neat. When in reality there's like 500 things in there still accessible from a stacks menu on the menu bar.

Hi again, Jon - I'm pleased to report that folders can be included in groups... that would have been a crazy omission if it wasn't possible, but as I say, it is possible, so all's OK there. :-)

Though what's now a bit of a worry is, it seems a file can't be dragged from outside of the group into a folder in one of the groups. You have to open the folder first... unless i'm missing something...

You're welcome, Bray. Yes, it looks to be well worth it for the time saved. My only reservation so far though is was I wrote above... hopefully they'll write back and tell me it can be done in the full version, or something...

You're welcome, too; and good to hear!

Cheers, Aaron. And your way is interesting too; everyone's different as to how they work, aren't they!

OK, I'm backtracking a bit now, after using the trial for a short while....

It's not as amazing as I thought it was (or could be)... mainly because the folders and files inside the groups are essentially Aliases, and the actual files as groups are put into a separate folder somewhere else. This has to be on the same level as your groups if you want to drag files into the (alias) folders in groups, I've gleaned... (but I can't seem to drag that group collection folder back to the desktop, it just makes an alias...)

Another problem is, if you delete the group, the folder and files appear back on the desktop where they originally were, but not in the positions they were arranged in the group... a small niggle, I guess though.

Anyhow, I'll persevere with the trial for a short while longer; but my opinion of it has become a bit tarnished...

Hope I haven't raised your hopes too much for them to be dashed... Maybe I was expecting too much of the app at the start....

(But still good about different colour groups + headings, easy icon size control, etc; I think it's just the Alias aspect that's thrown me off key with this app...)
