OS compatibility question

So i haven't done anything with GS in about a year. (Got swamped with work, i'm in the navy and am still currently deployed) My wife back home finally bought me my own macbook to work on rather than having me steal hers all the time (took some convincing) and i was curious as to if i NEEDED the most recent OS for mac or if it will run just fine on snow leopard.

EDIT: Only reason i'm asking like this is because the internet out here at sea is ridiculously slow and trying to search for the answer has been quite hellish.
