Importance of a .com domain?

Well the title says it all :)

Exactly how important is it with a .com domian name for your company/studio/buissness?

Its really hard to get hold of a good domainname theese days, so the question is:

Would I be totally wrong in getting lets say a .org/net or even .se domain? :)

My belief is that nobody cares about that - the people will look at (and hopefully care about) the content of the website, not which top domain that you use.

För övrigt anser jag så klart att du ska skaffa en se-domän :)

that being said, the first thing people are going to do is add a .com to any web address they type in.

best idea is to find a name you like and try and get the .com/.net/.org just to be sure no one tries to name squat

Yes, I agree about the dot com bit...

More reasons: for instance, I've just made a new website for my writing, ( http://davidjohngriffin.com if anyone wants to check it out... ) and deliberately chose dot com instead of dot co dot uk, for two reasons (same reasons I chose my apps website to end in dot com as well):

First, dot com is shorter so quicker to type than dot co dot uk - and second, I get the idea that - because the majority of websites are dot com possibly - this is seen, perhaps sub-conciously, as being more professional - or at the least, more "worldly" (if that's the right word) than dot co dot uk...

Yes, I don't think you'd go too wrong by choosing dot com...

As a general rule of thumb, its always best to purchase your domain name in .com .net and the country variants that relate to your location.

I've owned domains since 2001, and have always found if you want to protect your name, you need to ensure you do so.

It's not hard to make all the extra domains alias's of the main one that you want to use, and this way if someone types in any of them, they all show the main site.

If you really want to protect your name, you also apply for the trademark with it as well. But if you're going to this point, you want to make sure your name is not already trademarked in the clauses that you want to have it involved with.
