Just .png files running as animation. But you can optimize them and even reduce frame rate and of course size them smaller too. Too much will bloat your scene so be careful. You should experiment though and see if making .pngs of all your video frames will work well enough for your needs or not.
Still has to be .png but depending upon your image program, you should be able to either uncheck the transparency button (if using PNG-24), which will reduce the file size or even try PNG-8 which will reduce the file side greatly. I always use the "Save for Web" in either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
