Will free app version get my paid for updates for free since they already own it?

I released a free game with IAP to unlock full version. They can play whole game with 1 charater. The other characters are locked unless they buy the game. I am going to be adding another character and want to change the app from "free" to $0.99 and have full game unlocked with no IAP to unlock. So will the people who have the free version have to pay to update? Or will they be able to do the update and basically have the game unlocked for free? I don't want both in App Store. I want to try out a bought version only.
