Are There Rules to Art?

So I'm part of a Facebook group that does graphic design, and they say that there are rules to making graphic art and designs. What do you all think? I personally disagree completely, and think that any rule in art is merely a suggestion.

Having trouble with your game? Sounds like a personal problem.

Art is completely subjective and so there are no 'rules' , people may just have strong preferences but it doesn't mean you are in any way restricted to a set of rules :)

If art would have rules, it would not be art :)

I Would guess that by rules they mean things like if you have a red ball the shadow should be slightly green, because green is the contrasting color, and that is supposedly the most appealing to the eye. However you can assuredly do 'art' without these rules, but I suspect that they exist for a reason, and that the best artists work with the rules, and use them to their advantage.

there are rules to graphic art, of cause there are, but its not what you think, its bascilly about resolution, screen size, distance from eye, colours, pallets, etc, things like that, not really creative rules but digital constraints that create rules and best practices to stick too,

For instance, when creating pixel art in photoshop always scale by the power of 5 "that could be the wrong figure", but always use nearest neighbour as scaling method,,,, its things like that i would say are rules!!

I am a trained and professional artist-- there are rules to follow, but the idea of art is to learn everyone else's rules, then break them.

Here are some rules I was taught:
    1. Comics and cartoons are not art
    2. Stick figures certainly can't be considered art
    3. Art should always be sophisticated
    4. Video games are junk

I have spent the last 20 years working to prove them wrong; somewhere along the way, I found plant of folks to agree with me! :)

Look at the art you like-- be inspired by it-- try and surpass it -- go get 'em!

Sounds like the same people who say I can't camp in Call of Duty.

It's more like understanding the fundamentals of design, color, composition, lighting, history etc. etc. So yes, there are dos and dont's. Being artistic does not exactly make you an artist. Then there is more to consider, especially for anyone that plans on doing this professionally. Get yourself a copy of the Graphic Artist's Guild Handbook of Pricing and Ethical Guidelines.
