I dont know about free but pixelmator is a very close second to photoshop in my opinion. Its free for 30 days (full version) and then only $30 for the full version.

A lot of people also use Inkscape and Gimp for art creation.

Yup Inkscape is free and easy to learn! I use it for my apps.

    I use Photoshop CS6.
By far the best program for creating art (for me at least :yum:)

I like DAZ Studio, so I'll put in another plug for them. It's the primary program I've been using to create the art and gameplay graphics for Pirate Poker, mostly because it's easy and just so fun to use.

(If you haven't seen the Pirate Poker preview yet check, check out the pics and videos on these forums.)

So, I should say a little about Daz Studio, even though I've plugged this program in similar posts.

It'sa free 3D Art program for hobbyists. The software used to cost anywhere from $200-$400 depending on included features, but the company changed their business model some time ago and now they just give it away. Their new focus is on selling great 3D assets since that's where the real money is. Poser, the comparable program to Daz Studio (and former Daz business partner) still costs somewhere in that range and they also charge for their assets.

Daz Studio is made to run Poser models and Daz models, import .obj files and a few other 3D formats. These would be pre-modeled characters, scenery, clothing, buildings, vehicles, weapons and props, lights, cameras - and everything else you need to make great 3D Art with little or no modeling experience.

Professional modelers and artists use these assets to round out their library with items that just don't need to be remodeled over and over (why reinvent the wheel for every single image or movie) and hobbyists use it to produce some pretty amazing art.

There is a slight learning curve, but there are tons of instructional videos on Youtube that guide you through literally every step of the process. I learned using these videos, so pretty much anybody can do it.

You can only produce 2D images and videos with this product, since it is against the terms of service (with some paid exceptions) to produce anything where the 3D model can be extracted from the end product. So, no 3D games without checking with DAZ reps first.

They do charge for 3D assests, as do their multiple competitors around the web, but there are tons of sites out there where you can find loads of commercial-use FREE stuff uploaded by pro artists and hobbyists alike. Some of these assets are just as good as the items being sold in the marketplace, and can be found at Sharecg.com and Renderosity.com's free stuff page, and even the free stuff page on DAZ3d.com. There are also more, you have to dig for them.
