FEATURE REQUEST: Stop RC Creators from becoming Default program

gingagaminggingagaming FREELANCE GS DEVMember Posts: 1,685

Here is a feature request for stopping any Release Candidate Version from becoming the default program for opening files.

If you are like me and use Creator daily, downloading a RC is a pain because it becomes the default program. This results in files being opened in the RC version instead of the stable version. This means I have to always right click and "open with" the stable version.

My request id to ask the installer if they want it to become the default program or not. Or at minimum, ask the user to confirm that it wants to be opened with a RC version or stable.

Why? Personally ive lost hours of work working inside a RC version when I shouldnt be. As a daily user of creator, the gamesalad UI is part of my office and I dont see the big bold red letters warning me that its a RC version.

Besides, we all want to use the stable version over the RC. We only use the RC for either testing or fixing a bug in a stable release. RC for most people is not the default program and therefore shouldnt be forced into it being default.

If you want to vote for it, here is the link:

A way to avoid this -- and I know, it's not a foolproof solution, but for the time being: as soon as you come to the computer, launch GameSalad Stable. As long as it is open, and the only instance of GS running, all GS projects you click on will (try to) open in that version.

So does the installation change the default even if you manually set it up in Finder? Personally, I have no experience with this happening as I prefer to work in the latest version, Stable, RC, Nightly, doesn't matter.

I am the proverbial exception to this rule. :) Yeah, I guess I'm kind of Star Trek, boldly going where no man has gone before...

This is what I dont want to have to do thou Ghost. Its a secondary program so should be secondary when opened! (but thanks for the input.) Personally I like to close GS every so often as it starts to slow down when in and out of actors (I use it 10+ hours a day!) So this option is still a pain in the butt.

It always defaults to the RC. Dam thing!

I use Alfred, so after closing GS (it's really necessary every couple hours) and cleaning memory, I immediately launch it again from the keyboard.

In any case, whatever are the preferences of each user, it should be respected, so if you set it to open with Stable, then it should!

Ive never heard of Alfred. Ive just googled it and downloaded, seems like a cool widget. Cheers!

Yes! This would be so nice!

Yes, it's great. I used QuickSilver for years, which does pretty much the same, but then they stopped updating it for a long time, so I switched to Alfred.

I pretty much have an entirely empty dock if apps aren't running, and launch everything via Alfred. It learns as you go along and prioritizes accordingly, so a simple 'Command-Space G Enter' launches GS.

Make sure you vote for it then Braydon. Unfortunetly only 10 people hold badges for RC/Nightly build feedback (Nightly Warrior) which means not a lot of votes will be collected for this!

So every vote will count. Ill need yours, @jonmulcahy‌ @colander‌ @POM‌ @beefy_clyro‌ and if he gets the chance to get to his laptop from having his new addition to his family @uptimistik‌ vote too! (Congrats Johnathan)

I see. And how does it relate to this vote specifically? @gingagaming‌ mentioned that since only 10 people have the badge, not a lot of votes will be collected for this.

The idea of an RC is for users to test the software and report bugs before release. The fact that only 10 users hold the badge says to me that out of the thousands of users only a handful bother reporting them. With that in mind my logic is why would someone use 1 of there votes using the bug database to correct a RC software feature if they don't bother to report bugs in the same software using the same system.

Do you get Nightly Warrior for reporting RC bugs as well? If that is the case, you don't get it just for reporting one bug, otherwise I would have the badge as well.

Also, if you have say, 5 noticeable bugs in a release, it means only 5 people can report a bug. So it doesn't follow that nobody else in the thousands of users reports bugs, just that they are slower and the bugs are already reported. ;)

Can't argue with that ghost. I think the most important issue here is if you vote then it will stand a chance if being noticed. If you don't vote, It will just be lost in the deep sea of other requests.

That badge is for finding issues in the nightly. I am a proud holder of such a badge :p I think I earned it for spotting bugs in multiplayer. Not that it's vital but we need a whole new crop of badges. I've just about maxed out. I just need a game of the month victory to round it off. I have hopes for CanAball.

I would love to see this feature added but it doesn't bother me enough to get one of my votes.

As for badges... I don't seem very good at earning badges. Though I do have one that none of you guys have, so that's something :D

Absolutely, we need to get a lot more people a'voting. I have my votes maxed-out.

The one thing is that you need to be PRO to vote, I think, which really limits possibilities.

With RCs being available to non-PRO and all, would it be possible to give non-PRO members, say, 2 votes, so that they can pitch in as well? @BlackCloakGS‌ @adent42‌ @ForumNinja‌

Ha. You're no where close to earning all of them. There are badges stored up which havent been awarded to anyone...yet. ;)

The Nightly badge is manually awarded, so its possible others have earned it, but one of us badge distributers didnt see it. Feel free to hit me up and i can get you hooked up if you feel youve earnd it.

@pHghost Since we don't have a badge finding bugs in the RC I have been awarding the badge for finding bugs in the RC as well. Keep on hunting and finding bugs and the badge can be yours.

Well you should make a list and how you earn them.

While we're talking about badges, how does a person earn the morning one? Is it dependent on a particular time-zone?

And what's the deal with this one?

You have to ask for many badges as most don't fire. I asked for the morning badge as I was always on very early in the morning. This is why I asked for a list. Most don't fire.

Then I want the panda badge please.

    There's a list here: http://forums.gamesalad.com/badges/

(There's tons on there that should be given to waaay more people imho.)

If I wanted to be pushy for badges, I'd say I've earned the following:

    A month to remember

    Anciet membership

    Book of Knowledge

    Community Champion

    Compass

    Fresh Start

GameHunk (according to my mum at least)

    GameSalad Time

    Helping Hand

    Morning Treat

Panda, Panda Flying Through Space... (I found it, it should be mine :P)

    Perfect Week

Say Cheese (And @Socks too, for our excellent cheese discussion a while back)

    Welcome Back

    World Teacher's Day

I'm not saying to give me all these badges. It would be a very tedious job for someone. But there's definitely a lot of badges deserved by a lot of people :D

Edit: Please don't give me all these badges! Except the panda one. I do want the panda one.

@Armelline‌ - I agree you deserve a few. I've awarded you the Book of Knowledge and Community Champion. But, because this thread is for requesting a bug fix, let's keep it at that. You, or anyone else, can PM me for any more badge requests.
