So today I was looking at all of these games such as doodle cannon, danger cats, star daze HD, asplosion, etc and I was wondering what you guys use to create such stunning artwork. There are so many artwork programs such like illustrator, Photoshop, etc and never knew which one to use. Could someone let me know which one is the best to create game development artwork and the pricing of it and level of difficulty to use, etc.

illustrator : industry standard for vector artwork
Photoshop : industry standard for pixel artwork

Both are highly recommended. However i still love freehand. But as good as they are, they are useless without creativity and skill. Practice and experiment night and day. A lot of love goes into creating killer graphics, and if you don't love it, you're probably better off finding someone who does.

www.smashingmagazine.com is web design orientated but is great for inspiration, and tutorials.

    Good luck!

go for photoshop flash cs4 ( paid ) or gimp 2 or pixen.
For sound FX and music buy fruit loops !
for Special FX or you can draw them ( with blur and lightning FX) or you could buy an FX creator that exports in png files your creations.

But don't use tools without buying them or you are going to be sued!!

This may sound dumb... I've used Photoshop a LOT but never touched Illustrator... what's vector graphics (I'm guessing not the same kind as the Star Wars arcade game? LOL). Is it using shapes etc? If so, is there a good free alternative, like Gimp is to PS?

    These are all vector graphics...

The distinction between vector based and pixel based illustration has blurred recently. With both illustator and photoshop offering similar functions. But basically, if i want to illustrate i use a vector based app, saving photoshop for photo editing. But that's just a preference thing. As for free vector tools, sorry i don't have experience of any.

None of my games were mentioned so I don't feel the need to be specific :)

Vector graphics are based on mathematics and can be scaled to any size and never distort. You can scale them close up or far away and should not loose its original look

Pixel graphics, if zoomed in, will loose its detail. Rasta graphics are the same as well.

@goliath, I was browsing through your site, and I must say, nice work! Unfortunately I really do not need artwork from others on my current project I am just asking this question for future reference, but Ill definitely consider you for my next project :)

I use Photoshop for all my graphics. I have been using it for 20 years now so I am used to it.

A great cheap alternative to Photoshop is Pixelmator.
Pixelmator does everything that I use Photoshop for, plus it has a beautiful interface. It's also 60$ vs. 700$

A great free alternative is the online painting program, sumo paint:

A free vector drawing app for Mac is InkScape:

Sumo paint is very robust actually. I could easily make all the graphics that I made for Stunt Squirrels!, Danger Cats!, even my new game, in Sumo Paint.

Plus it is free, and I can access it from any computer.

I am just so used to Photoshop, but if $$ is an issue, it is certainly a great alternative.

Let me tell you something about inkscape.... it's very annoying at first but has become one of my favorite programs to date. it's free and it produces some of the best images your mind can think of. I think that inkscape is more for logo design than say game graphics per say.... It's a vector based program as well.

Gimp is also a free alternative to photoshop and also produces some amazing results. It has layers and filters and all that sort of good stuff.

If you are not an artist however, these programs may frustrate you at first. Even though it's easy for me to say because art is what I do, stick with it and try to learn these programs because you can get some amazing results.

Also- when I first downloaded inkscape, even I was a little intimidated (and I went to school for art) so make sure you hit up youtube as they have a lot of tutorials on there!!

Hope this helps. Feel free to shoot me an email if you use any of these and have questions. I would be happy to help.

(I will be checking out sumo paint in the near future as I have no experience with that one but has piqued my interest)
