I play pretty much exclusively puzzle games. I have poor hands and limited dexterity, so any game requiring really fast reactions of constant pressing on the screen is going to annoy me very quickly.
Of the "big name" games, the ones I loved most were Peggle, Cut the Rope, Where's My Water (though the IAP for that one is stupidly expensive), adventure games like Myst, point and click games like Beneath a Steel Sky and Broken Sword.
Hard to say, but if what your looking for is the type of game you should build, then you should consider all your options. The most played category will have the most competition so it becomes harder to get noticed. The smaller market, even though less people play it, will greatly increase your chance at exposure. How you target the selected audience also plays a huge role. There is a lot more to it that just that though.
But to answer your question, i prefer puzzle games
People are different so its hard to say tbh have you tried finding some charts for mobile games? see which ones have been the most popular over the last few months.
