Designed for iPad portrait with RI doesn't look good on iPhone

Hello forumers, thank you for helping a noob out. I promise to someday repay the kindness you're showing me to a new generation of noobs.

I designed a project in iPad portrait mode with RI checked. Today I uploaded an ad hoc test version to my iPad Air and it looks great! I loaded up the same .app to my iPhone 4S and SOME things are centered and look fine, others near the corners are cut off or not laid out properly. What did I do wrong? I see tutorial videos about universal build like this one:

but it was uploaded nearly a year ago so I'm hesitant to do it.

GS emulator accurately reproduces the size errors when I pick legacy iphone in overscan mode. Letterbox mode is fine but obviously has the black bars which I don't want.

Thank you for any guidance!

The recommendation generally is to turn RI off, and have your images 3x the size of your actors in the game. RI has a habit of blurring images in certain circumstances.
