Do I need 6.1 xcode to make ios 8 compatible apps? Because i'm using mavericks v10.9. Wondering If I should upgrade to yosemite 10.10

You don't need Yosemite. You just need to have the latest version of Xcode which is Xcode 6.1.1. I have Mavericks and everything works fine. I believe there are still some bugs that are occurring with GS and Yosemite.
