Flying and Running Issues

In a platformer game I'm making, the character can jump, crouch, and move left to right. While there is more to come, for now I have an issue. For whatever reason, when the character is moving side to side, gravity no longer applies. In other words, if Character X jumps, then presses 'a' or 'd' to more to the side, they will run around in midair, basically flying, unless the player chooses to let go and let them fall. I've been using this program for only a few days, so I'm still making newbie mistakes, I know, but I thought I'd ask just in case. Is there a way to fix this, to make it so that running left and right does NOT mean defying the laws of physics?
