I'm beginning with GS and am wondering how to create game art. I have Windows installed via boot-camp so don't worry about OS's if linking me to tutorials / software!

You can't go past Photoshop if you can afford it (or are a naughty person with an illegal copy). It's the bees knees, industry standard for a reason ;)

There are some great cheaper alternatives too. Pixelmator is very nice to use (that's what I use) and Gimp is VERY powerful and also free, just ugly as hell to look at.

As for the sprite art, you can't go past Pixen. It's free and it's fantastic.

If you're not rich, try photoline. Great altervative to photoshop. Its only 60€.

Never heard of that one... might look at it myself. I like Pixelmator but it lacks a few features.

Photoshop Elements is pretty sweet, too. And WAY cheaper than the CS version ;)

Don't see why you wouldn't as long as you created them from scratch... it's 3D, though, isn't it?

Also for SketchUp, I would use a Render thing as some of them block out the background and make it all black. That would help chroma keying to be a whole lot easier.

Also, what royalty free music / sound fx web sites do you recommend for someone who is a music noob?

    Anyway, thanks for the suggestions!

I like Gimp and it is free as POLYGAMe said. It can do just about anything that Photoshop can do its just frustratingly different. Can't beat the price if you don't need to use PS plugins.

Adobe illustrator is THE program of choice...

    - Vector graphics, easily scalable for iphone and ipad
    - repeatable patterns (for backgrounds, floors, star maps etc)
    - lower file sizes

    Definitely the one to get

if you don't have enough money for Illustrator, check out Inkscape. It's free and is an amazing program!! There is a learning curve to it though so stick with it.

Try using sketch up then export a 3d object.

I've been mucking around with various apps because my Photoshop Elements won't run on my Intel Mac GRRRRRR. I do love Photoshop but there are alternatives.

I've been playing with Pixen, Photoline, Gimp, Inkscape and Pixelmator. Afte loads of image editing for my game Max Vector, I have pretty much whittled it down to two apps. I use Pixen for sprites/animation and also image resizing as it does "nearest neighbour" which is great for my 8 Bit art. For BG editing and tiling etc I've found Photoline to be the bees knees. it is super powerful, relatively cheap and quite easy to use.

So that's is, Pixen (even though there are still quite a few bugs) and Photoline. I gave up on Pixelmator when it simply stopped wanting to draw on certain images... it was just a little too unstable for me.

Gimp and Inkscape are pretty cool too but I gave them the boot as they are X-11 apps... which annoys me.

I'm REALLY loving Photoline... not looking forward to the trial running out....
