Nearest Neighbour

cBrookscBrooks Member, PRO Posts: 40

Hey, I recently made a discussion related to the topic of upping the resolution of my pixel art images. Socks provided me with helpful info to drag it into photoshop and resize it using nearest neighbour. I created a 3x3 pixels black H and tried this technique with it in photoshop. It worked great (or so I thought). Today I tried to do the same with a coloured image. Sadly, the colour is majorly distorted and the inner pixels are destroyed. Ill attach a few photos of before and after. If you know why this is happening, please notify me.

Hi @cBrooks although Photoshop is a highly sophisticated program, the algorithms used for enlarging isn't too sophisticated.

There are quite a few free online programs for enlarging an image without losing detail - Google with "enlarge image online" and see which programs does the job best for you.

You've simply not used nearest neighbour ! In fact your 'after' picture is not using any of Photoshop's interpolation methods at all, it's using some kind of facet/median filter.

It also doesn't help that your original image (the 'before' image) is made up from more pixels than it need be, it would be best to work at a pixel level and then use NN to enlarge.

Sorry, I realised that I hadn't selected nearest neighbour and was using Bicubic resizing for smooth edges. It is working great now. How can I delete posts?

Haha sorry @socks, I had selected Bicubic rather than Nearest neighbour. Sorry for the trouble.

I'm pleased that you've got it working now with @Socks' help. For the record: for enlarging photos, you can still get better results sometimes using one of those other programs tho'.

So because of those things, best to keep your thread as it is, so it can hopefully help others too.

Ok. Thanks btw, I had a look but the programs I could find were costly or only had a 30 day free trial. But I am sure there are simpler, more effective and cost efficient methods than using photoshop. Thanks for the advice.

I know there are free ones - I'll see if I can find some for you for the future; give me ten minutes!
