Project size issues with jpegs and pngs!

I am trying to reduce the size of my game to under 50mb so that i can upload to Googleplay.

Whilst doing this I have noticed an odd thing. My project size is getting larger!

I have changed the background images from png's to jpeg's and compressed them. All the images i want to change are now about half the size of the originals already in the game salad project.

However when I delete the larger png's from game salad and replace them with the smaller jpeg's files, game salad seems to consider these images larger! I have doubled checked that the images are smaller in size. An example;

1 png image is 88kb, with project file size 59.9mb. I deleted this image and project size went down to 59.8mb. I then added the jpeg which is 44kb, and the project size went up to 60mb! I change all the images(about 32 images each about half the original size) in case there was a slight error in the way that game salad display the project size and now my project is about 10mb larger then when i started!

I have tried changing the images from the creator and replacing them in the actual file, however the project size always ends up getting bigger!

Has anyone any ideal where I am going wrong?
