The games there look amazing, I dont think I would stand a chance. Has anyone from GS been a finalist in previous years?

Yeah I just saw that. By then I'll probably have a couple of sequels done which are bound to be better than my first game! lol.

Loaded the page, immediately saw the $95 entry fee, lost interest.

There's a separate one for students which is free. I see that mostly college students took part in the student competition. Im 14, would that be too young?

There are terms and conditions that require you to attend the show and have a booth - there may be age restrictions on that, or they may allow it if you have a guardian with you. Best email and ask really.

I think I might enter this. Project K is almost done, and the game 'after' that I'm hoping to have done by August. It's pretty original, so I might submit that... you never know :D

Thanks for pointing us in the right direction, Yoda.

    Damn kids!

    Just joking.

Next year I'd love to take part in this thing; wont be ready in time for this year, sadly :(

You calling me a kid???? I am very mature... :)

What do you mean you wont be ready? You have plenty of time to make the game...

What is nice is that you are competing against other Indie developers, and not the large studios.

My friends created "Iron Dukes" in Flash and won the IGF web category two years ago. They won $2500, which is nice, but with that exposure they were both able to get professional jobs in the industry.

One of them got a job at 2K Marin as a level designer for BioShock 2.

@xSlamGx: Thanks! We'll see! Maybe I will enter this year!

    Hey, everybody!

Anyone who's seriously considering entering this contest, please let us know!

We'd love to try and work out a way for you to share your experience getting a game ready for this competition and exhibition. If you're serious about submitting a game to IGF this year, please send us an email at our contact address. Thanks!

    What does that mean exactly?

While originally grumpy with this contest, probably because I'm in a bad mood already (no iAds support in GameSalad yet), I looked at this contest again. Considering the rate of growth, it seems that there will be about 400 entries in this year's contest. With eight prizes, and all contestants considered equal, that's a 1 in 50 chance of winning. The problem, as quantumsheep pointed out, you have to go there. $2500 is nice, but after taxes, entry fee and transportation expenses, that's not a lot of money left over. Obviously the $20,000 prize makes things a lot more interesting, but that's probably going to be difficult to win.

Yet, this contest seems to be a good way for an independent developer to get noticed.

In September or early October, I might reconsider the idea of entering this contest. But right now, $95 could be better spent on digital assets or the renewal of my Apple developer license.

I'm wondering why there isn't another Gendai Games competition. I started with GameSalad just as the old contest was ending.

Isn't though that 150 games get sponsored or (picked)

I'm serious about entering. However, after reading the terms, I'm still not sure if a finished game, which will already be on the app store, will be eligible.

The terms state that the game needs to be feature complete with at least one level finished. I can't see anything about my concern above in there though.

If it's not a problem, I'll enter. Maybe twice! But I don't want to hold back a game from the app store just to enter the competition!

    Cheers,

I agree! I found the Gendai Competition very motivating to finish my project, and the Pro License grand prize was fantastic motivation.

As for this contest, I'd love to enter, but the idea have having to set up a booth and such just sounds awful :p

What does that mean for us though? With the iTunes App store, we're published. We don't have to worry about the expense of getting our games released on the consoles or in retail stores. And if someone said, "Hey dude... Commove is great! We want to publish it for the Nintendo DS." That would be a problem, as I currently lack the programming skills necessary to port my game to the Nintendo DS.

Ah, you saw that issue too. I don't see if this contest applies for published iTunes games. Do I just send them a promo code? You could probably submit GameSalad games as a zipped Mac package, with instructions on how to download the GameSalad software.

Heh... that's interesting... the pro license at $1999 is a more exciting contest prize to me, rather than $2500 in cash. That's probably because I can make more money with a pro license and build the Photics brand.

Actually, having a booth sounds cool to me. I'd probably enjoy showing off Photics games. Yet, this booth would be in California, right? That's an expensive trip. Even more so for our GameSalad buddies across the pond.

I would also like to point out that last year, Apple featured all the IGF Mobile finalists on the front page of iTunes. In no way can I guarantee that they will do that again this year, but it's still something to keep in mind - a possible extra benefit to having a game included.

I'm completely unfamiliar with this competition. Does anyone know what they are looking for? Do they grade on bells and whistles? Will things like no leader boards, no pause, etc. hurt? Do they want to see high polish, or original ideas, or what?

    It really does sound interesting.

To give you an idea, former game winners in the Student event were the people who designed Portal. After winning the competition, they were hired as a team to make Portal for Valve.

    @QS

Not sure. Still sorting through the details of the submission rules and guidelines myself. If I find anything concrete I'll let you know.

I entered Doodle Cannon into the student competition (since I'm a college student). It's free and there's still cash prizes involved. From what I read, they accept apps that are already on the appstore and there's still time for updates before they will look at it since the submissions end in a few months. So any college or high school students should def. enter the free competition :)
