Corona has got to be one off the most gentle ways to get into coding/scripting and they just announced this http://anscamobile.com/corona/education/ they have very quick support and anything you learn would certainly help with understanding game design in GS.

I like the look of RunRev too... nice, easy "english" scripting language... but way too expensive.

@polygame: RunRev has been since the 90s...it reminds me of HyperCard. Unfortunately, Apple rejected RunRev mobile on the App Store: http://www.runrev.com/company/runrev-blog/revmobile-and-apples-iphone-sdk-agreement

Looks like they don't have Box2D or iAds.

It has a subset of Box2d. But even that is more complete than GS's implementation...It supports Polygon collision types.
