Has anyone paid for advertising, and did you reap a profit back afterwards?

Good Question as I haven't yet either but thinking of doing so for my next game to get more exposure. I would love any recommendation on any positive paid advertisement :)

I bought some twitter promotions (people with 50-100K followers that tweet about your game)

The result....Nothing! No spike in downloads what so ever, and that was on a free game.Total waste of money if you ask me, but I know some people have had luck with it. :)

Unless you have thousands to spend on marketing, you are better off researching free ways to advertise. The market is already cluttered with big corporations pushing out millions in marketing. Do you have the funds to compete with them (rhetorical)? You would be better off spending your money on graphics, audio, website designing.

Believe it or not, cross promotion works really well. Chartboost has a really nice system set up. Find the day of the week where you get the most downloads and release it on those days. Tweet and share your app and ask others to do the same. This is all free and more beneficial than buying a twitter promotion (I found this out the hard way).

Twitter is a waste of time. The key thing to remember is that you want to

    a) target downloads
    b) increase installs

Facebook is a tough one but it can help if you drive people to install your app. NEVER advertise on facebook. They use 'click farms' therefore, no matter how much your budget, you will always get 'Likes' impressions etc because facebook want your cash. It won't benefit you at all.

This video will help but adapt it to drive installs

@jigglybean thats really insightful, thank you.

Has anyone tried advertising in chartboost, $0.50 per install? Thats at least a guaranteed install.

$0.50 install for Free games or paid? If it's free then your game better be monetized very well to get your money back :)

I have never used Facebook ads, but from what I've heard its pretty much waste of money too.
