Hello
Has anybody noticed different performances on different platforms (iPod, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, etc...)

Yup. BIG difference between say 3G and 3GS. My games runs pretty badly on my iPod Touch 2G but sweet on a 3GS. The Touch only has 24MB of vram, I believe and the 3GS has 256!

I'm optimising right at the mo though so I can have something decently playable on older systems ;)

    As I thought
I posted that question because on my iPod I have the bad feeling GS is frame based and not time based....

Going forward, i wouldnt worry too much about the older devices, i know the idevice market was mainly 3G but i think a lot of those people would of been coming to the end of their contract and renewing with the iphone4. Depending on what kind of game you're making it can be very hard trying to get it running on the older devices

Don't forget about us old cronies! There is still a huge amount of people using iPod touch and we're not as fast moving as you young things...

Time for some ovaltine and a nap I think...

Kids are still a big market for games, and kids are more likely to have an iPod than and iPhone. I wish I had statistics, would be interesting to see.

Also, I would assume that the iPod will be redesigned to look more like the iPhone 4 at some point and the performance will increase. I'm also looking forward to the iPad with the iPhone 4 look... that's when I'll buy one.

I'm one of the many who had a G3 and skipped the 3GS and ordered an iPhone 4. My game basically wouldn't run on the 3G so I quit developing for it. I assume it would be okay on the 3GS but as I can't test on one, I won't give it much thought (and the simulators do not seem to reflect the actual device accurately for me).

Everything runs like a dream on the iPad and no doubt it will on the iPhone 4, as the latter has twice the amount of ram as the iPad. So for my current game, I'm pretty well resigned to releasing it for the current new crop, which is fine.

For older devices, I guess you have to cut according to your cloth and create less demanding games that you can test and know works on them.

For me the key is to test on actual devices to be sure.

    Cheers!
