So while the high prices for GS helps to not flood the AppStore with crap...
will Flash CS5 flood the Appstore with high quality content?

What do you think?

I am not sure but i don't like this news ;)

It rocks..i think gamesalad will need 50% discount for year membership..

This could be bad, there really could be a massive influx of crappy apps written in Flash.
Hopefully there we be a reasonable level of scrutiny placed on all flash authored content. Wonder what the licencing will be like? (cost of flash and an apple licence)

i think there are soo much flash games at the web... and i have seen so many games that are really good at the web... far better than most of the apps you can buy... so in my opinion we will see a big raise of quality...

and the competition will make it harder to sell your own game!

As long as it brings games like this to iPhone I'll be happy:

    http://www.adamatomic.com/canabalt/

Buy it - seriously - my fave iPhone game thus far!

As to being a GS killer - maybe. I don't know. I just know that I learnt some Flash a few years ago, and it just didn't click with me. I'm sure there are plenty of others too.

It means that we all have to raise our game a bit, and that includes the fine people at GS :)

I don't think flash is as drag and droppy as gs, so I don't this would be a gs killer.

Hey QS this is MY favourite Game!!

But internet is full of some flash game templates.. just customize it and export as iphone app and work is done... Ok i think when cs5 will be presented then game publishing in apple will take 3x more time, because waves of trash will want to be in app store..

    On second thoughts....

GS is pretty unique, It's main point of difference is the ease of use factor and the accessibility of the software.

Flash CS5 might be able to export .ipa files but this does not mean everyone will be pumping out apps with it overnight - Learning AS3 is a major pain in the arse really and not a simple undertaking. Most designers like myself could use AS2 with a reasonable level of understanding and then they went and changed it radically with AS3 and I really could not be stuffed starting almost from scratch again. It's a serious developer language now. I had a go initially and then just gave up....... my brain was full and i have no room left!

Suffice to say AS3 is a steep learning curve and a difficult language which puts GS way out in front.

Some may disagree, but I know that finding a Flash developer who really knows AS3 are extremely rare. (you need to be like CodeMonkey and use a completely different part of the brain and think in code)

You're kidding if you don't think this will hurt GS. I'm a developer and I like GS, but I will take a look at AS5. GS is still lacking in some features and I think having to pay $500 to test your game on the IPhone is a mistake. I'm not saying Adobe will be any cheaper, but I think the company that can put more developers to the market the fastest and cheapest will be the one that dominates.

I would like to see more competition in this market, because it will drive the prices down. It will also mean more and better features.

JamesBoucher +1 and adobe flash i can use in web design, add banners, and more.. gamesalad just for game creating.. I think CS5 will be serious opponent of GS.. price+performance

Add to the mix that you will pay roughly $600 (or an upgrade price) once for CS5 compared to Game Salad's $500 a year. Someone might need to reconsider their cost structure in light of this new development.

Apple is not going to reject flash. You don't think Adobe hasn't already cleared this with Apple before making this kind of an announcement. It’s all about money baby…

I wonder how many of those 1 million developers are working on a Mac though.
  • quantumsheepquantumsheep Member Posts: 8,188

i have read huge discussions in flash-forums about how to make money with flash games... it looks like this has been a big problem and there is the way to make money with advertisement and the other way with so called "micro transactions" (correct me if i am wrong) ... so the second way is about games that you can play for free the first for example 10 levels and then you have to pay lets say 50cent for the next 5 levels or for a bigger gun etc...

So when this 1 million developers hear about the opportunity to make money with their games by simply compiling them to the iphone... i think the missing mac is no barrier to hold them back ;)

Btw... will GS get a flash-export within the next 12 month? (just curious..)

A GS to Flash export would be useful to some, I guess, but I'd be much more interested in a GS to Android platform export. If you believe the analysts -- emphasis on if -- Android-based smartphones will overtake the iPhone by 2012. Depending on the specific phone's capabilities, of course, that basically doubles the market for GS-generated games.

Here's a link to an article today on 9to5Mac...

I use my PC to build games for the Android phones and my Mac for the IPhone. I can build flash and port it to the Mac. I would think having both is someone common now.
  • eboyeboy Member Posts: 239
Hmm I think this is good. $500/$1999 A YEAR is just too expensive. If you can buy Flash CS5 with a export to xcode option for a one time fee of $500-$600 its game over man. It will just be an ugly race to the top as to the best Flash apps/games in the app store.

I would gladly pay a one time fee of $500 for GS, that is totally reasonable, but I just cant stomach the fact that's an annual fee.

game over??? what's game over? If you wanna spend the time to learn Flash CS5 or already know it, go ahead bro. But to say it's game over for GS is just plain ignorance. It's not "game over" for GS.

I think tshirt said it perfectly. You are comparing apples & oranges. GS is meant for those who don't wanna spend the time/money to learn to program. Plus programming, regardless of the language, WILL take longer to make a game than GS. So, lets keep the "GS is too expensive" posts to a minimum. Think it's too expensive? Don't buy it. That's the great thing about Democracy. You choose to use it? Pay for it. You don't? Don't.
(Sorry if this sounds harsh, just tired of all these 'too expensive' posts)

Right... back to the topic! Flash will definitely be awesome when it comes to the iPhone. Most video streaming sights use flash.. Hulu anyone?!? Flash IS coming & I can't wait. The full potential of the iPhone will be unlocked at that point. I bet there will be an abundance of video/media related websites popping up to take advantage as well.

As far as developing games, it's WILL flood the app store. Apple will have to do something. But as a developer our philosophy should remain the same. People want something different. Unique idea, marketing, great presentation (graphics) you get my drift... We'll see though!

Nicely put JGary, though being more efficient I'd have just used two words ;)

I wonder if this will accelerate GS's move to 3D?

What *do* the good folk at GameSalad think of this development?

Well, if Flash CS5 is coming out, I think there will be even more software packages that allow easier app creation. Unity3d is very intense, Flash, not as much. So imagine if Apple releases an Iapp creation package that is similar to GS.

The other great thing about Democracy is that everyone is entitled to their opinion and the above post is mine, so there.

wow.... so there?? I'll choose to exercise my Democratic right to NOT comment on that..
