how to make a laser beam turn on and off

Trying to create a laser beam and I can't help but think this a very simple question and the answer is even easier...but, I cannot think of a way to have a laser beam come on and then turn off after a certain period of time, then come on again, and repeat that forever.
I've used timers and interpolation. No hope in those. Any help?

Can you describe the cycle you want? Is it on for 5 seconds, off for 1 second, on for 5 seconds, off for 1 second, etc... or something else?

Brilliant, thank you so much! Now I shall keep that in mind when I want to do something else similarly... @tatiang

I hate it when it takes the demo project away when you accept the answer :( @tatiang

    So do I.

I'll add a Dropbox link above.

Edit: that was weird. As soon as I edited that post, it brought the attachment back.
